NOVEMBER

We cannot command the wind, but we can adjust our sails.
We cannot control the current, but we can adjust our rudders.

November is host to 18 dynamic aspects: 1 conjunction, 7 squares, 1 opposition, 2 ingresses, 1 Rx regress, 2 Rx stations, 1 direct station, 1 BSB (beginning shadow boundary), 1 new and 1 full Moon. These aspects, when making contacts to your chart can activate the energies within you, assisting you in your growth process.

Supportive cooperation is an overall theme for November. Venus is out of bounds the entire month, which leads us to discover out of the box materialistic yearnings and values that become not only popular, but possible, just through the sheer force of numbers of people adopting those characteristics. The idea of "more is better" can be elevated to "quality is preferable". Beginning modestly as we discover what we value, we put in place measures to make it happen, and develop and expand the process to include others in the process. A shift in this energy occurs on the 11/5 when we enter a time when the possibility of interactive cooperation remains, but is not so opulent. We feel the need to structure our desires around more practical terms, and to be more honest and sincere about their merit. A further shift in the dynamic energy on 11/21 again leads us to the possible addition of a spiritual dimension to our quest for quality, which continues through the middle of December.

A fixed grand cross dances through our lives during the first 10 days of November, giving us the potential to initiate solid, quality-based projects or to upgrade that which was started with the new Moon into more comprehensive, practical ventures.

As each planet moves through its Rx Shadow, we find it possible to identify and break old habit patterns, and find ways to create unity between the conscious and the super conscious, thereby healing the unconscious. Use that time to heal yourself in different areas.

11/1 Beginning new projects now will initiate long-lasting effects. Make sure that all your components are of high quality, and that you have thought out your objectives and intentions. The old phrase "be careful what you wish for" is of important significance. West coast emphasis: health, service, employment, and secret activity. East coast emphasis: children, investments, and group activity. New Moon 9:43 Scorpio west coast 5:24 PM, east coast 8:24 PM.

11/2 An identity crisis brings inner conscious awareness in conflict with the status quo. Work on keeping your sense of optimism by investigating your situation for spiritual lessons. Most discrepancies can be worked on internally before making public statements describing your state of mind. Avoid cutting off your options before you have thoroughly scrutinized other alternatives. (Part of the dancing fixed grand cross*.)

Sun squares Saturn 10:58 Scorpio/Leo, 11:21 PM.

11/5 an out of bounds Venus in Capricorn, an Earth sign brings an emphasis on materiality that is seldom satisfied with conventional dreams or wishes or values. The test here is to evaluate what you have and use your unconventional talents to create unique and positive solutions. If connected with illness or infirmity, investigate alternative or complementary treatments, or include prayer in your treatment. Venus enters Capricorn 12:11 AM.

11/5 Use your intuition to address challenges that seem to be baseless in their content. Emotionally based disputes cannot be resolved at the detail level, but must be explored and reasoned using principles. Recognition of artistic creations, such as the use of color or movement or the turn of a phrase is possible. Express your admiration for such works to nourish the artist’s self-esteem. For a different perspective, see 11/20. Mercury squares Uranus Rx 6:53 Sagittarius/Pisces, 4:27 PM.

11/6 A merging of conscious awareness and instinct may be utilized to discern when and how to act, however keep your path clear of distractions and when faced with a decision, take the high road using moral or spiritual principles as your guideline. * Sun squares Neptune 14:51 Scorpio/Aquarius, 8:11 PM.

11/6 Consider a courageous path that can get you where you want to go. A furtive, indecisive path will get you nowhere, and defeat your chances of reaching your goal. Those who oppose you would sense your vulnerability. Treat a lack of vitality or confidence with some inspirational material, or take your vitamins and take good care of your health until conditions change to support your goals. * Sun opposes Mars Rx 15:01 Scorpio/Taurus, 11:57 PM.

11/7 Interest in artistic or spiritual subjects may be followed to help you to see others in a more positive light. This can be a good time to donate to someone’s artistic work that you admire. Or, attend a conference or lecture on an inspirational subject, or assist someone in a way that supports his or her learning experience. Address that part of your condition that needs healing or enriching by engaging in positive activities. * Mars Rx squares Neptune 14:51 Taurus/Aquarius, 10:09 AM.

11/13 Situations surface that remind us of last June, and innovative or unconventional dilemmas that have not yet been resolved. Pay attention to how involved others react to details that to date haven’t reached an equitable solution. Reassess your position and gather information from other perspectives. Don’t burn your bridges. Mercury turns Rx 10:56 Sagittarius, 9:43 PM.

11/15 You may be pressured to make a decision or react to someone’s activity that you thought you understood. Now, however there are new facts that need to be scrutinized. December will bring more information that may change your entire attitude on the subject, and yet, there will be still more to be uncovered. This can bring a lot of confusion, and is a clue that current definitive action may be premature. Uranus turns direct 6:51 Pisces, 4:09 PM.

11/15 Many unresolved matters may surface to be resolved dealing with excess energy that has grown and developed to greater dimensions. Be prepared to deal with unresolved anger. Unresolved resentment and anger can manifest as illnesses or accidents. Projects that you thought were completed under a previous aspect in these degrees show what was lacking for proper closure. West coast issues: secrets, indirect access through negotiation and attaining future potential through hard work and selfless attitudes; east coast issues: identification with group consciousness, active communication, and development of creative ideas. (Recurring events make this a sensitive axis: Mars stationary Rx at this degree 10/01/05, Mercury stationary Direct 24 Scorpio 12/4/05.) Full Moon 23:46 Taurus, 4:57 PM west coast, 7:57 PM east coast.

11/18 More unresolved energies looking for a way to express. In a positive way, you can see a need and fill it with your own special talents, regardless of the source of the problem. Follow your intuition without trying to logically assess a situation. Such selfless deeds can bring positive transformation to a worthy recipient. Mars Rx squares Saturn 11:28 Taurus/Leo focusing through Pluto, 12:32 PM.

11/20 Issues present at 11/5 repeat in different costumes, but the same principles apply. Sudden and unexpected situations arise during as you communicate your concerns. Someone opens a link to a future process that can help pave the way for possible expansion and growth. Being truthful allows you the freedom you need to discover possible past errors, and to build or recover your integrity. Mercury Rx squares Uranus 6:51 Sagittarius/Pisces, 10:19 PM.

11/21 Your circle of quality friends may grow if you are open to new ways to develop your spiritual side. As your inner light grows, people will recognize it and be drawn to you. New principles in education, and modes of travel are becoming known, and are more usable. Sun enters Sagittarius 9:14 PM.

11/22 The beginning of a cycle that comes to completion in early March. It’s a wonderful time for gathering your ideas about what it is that will really make you happy. If your desires involve interactions with others, then strive to investigate the many potential facets of such a relationship, and how they can bring more depth and meaning to both parties. This is a time to perform genuinely compassionate, generous and considerate deeds, as all actions attract like responses. Venus BSB 16:02 Capricorn, 12 noon.

11/22 Changing your focus from the growth and development of a project to working with what you already have to secure its longevity can help you solidify your base of operations. To work on growth at this time would be premature, as a lot of changes will be forthcoming that require you to make many adjustments in your goals. Saturn turns Rx 11:19 Leo, 1:01 AM.

11/24 A redux of the September 17 Virgo concern for clear communications in safeguarding or creating a stable reputation. Now, you may discover that you have forgotten a few steps in the process that you had mapped out for yourself. You may feel uncomfortable because you can’t see the details clearly. Be patient, and when you speak, be careful of your statements. Make sure that you get your facts right. The final sequence of this aspect takes place in Aquarius 1/26/06. Mercury Rx conjoins Sun 2:28 Sagittarius, 7:42 AM.

11/26 Now you have some of the facts and tools to help you to retrace your steps, so that you may find the hidden loopholes or misunderstandings that were present during the early part of the month. Take your time, and keep track of your process. There is much information to be assembled, some of which is still hidden from sight. Mercury Rx re-enters Scorpio 4:03 AM

11/28 If you can concentrate on your dreams and desires you can add a symphony of excitement and enthusiasm to a previously routine project. The extra energy that you can infuse into your work will show, and will attract others who share your interests. Sun squares Uranus 6:55 Sagittarius/Pisces, midpoint Venus, 5:17 PM

*A dancing grand cross is a configuration composed of at least 4 planets in 90-degree sequences that move in and out of orb, changing emphasis as the aspects become exact. Generally one or more of the planets is retrograde. Very few configurations have all placements partile simultaneously.

NOVEMBER SYMBOLISM 2005

November was named for the 9th month of the Roman calendar. The dark face of the Goddess was honored, as the portion of daily darkness increased. The wisdom of the mature divinities, the dark goddesses, Hecate, Menat, Atropos, Lillith and Cailleach were acknowledged as a necessary part of the life cycle on November first, during the cross-quarter day, the festival of Samhain. This day also marks the Christian feast of All Saints, when Christian heroes and heroines are recognized and petitioned to assist mortals in their quest for a more blessed existence, and November second honors All Souls who have departed physical form. Many religions celebrate the Day of the Dead at the turn of the month. The ancient Egyptians celebrated it in mid-November. November 7 is the traditional beginning of the Festival of Plato, master philosopher and father of European mysticism.

Early November's gemstone is the Aquamarine or Beryl. In the East, they are revered as the stone of purity, given to the newly wedded to preserve and increase their mutual love. Also the stone of the Seer and Mystic, it was said to enhance visions. The wearer of these stones is assisted in finding hidden things. The Sagittarius part of November favors the topaz. It is worn to radiate the gift of light that dispels the darkness and ignorance that arises during the winter quarter. The topaz is said to calm anger in the wearer. True and lasting friendship is symbolized by the topaz, which is found in various colors – most are white, golden, pink, brown, and less often green, and black. First named Topazein, when first found on the Island of Topazos in the Red Sea, meaning: "to seek after". Pliny, the Elder called it "the Stone of Strength".

This year the Lunar-based feast of Ramadan runs from October 4 through November 2. Muslims fast every day from sunrise to sunset during this time. Its beginning is determined by the first sighting of the crescent Moon. This commemorates Muhhamed’s reception of the divine revelation as recorded in the Qur’an. The word Ramadan is derived from the Arabic root word ramida, meaning intense scorching heat and dryness, or ramdaa, meaning Sun-baked sand. This refers to a heating sensation in the stomach, a symptom of great thirst. Heat represents the energy that shapes and molds all matter, just as the ritual of abstinence reshapes, reforms, and remolds the believer’s physical and spiritual behavior throughout the warmth of the conscious experience of the daylight hours.

Gifts of light radiate from the sky in the direction of the constellation Leo between November 14 and 21, peaking on 11/17. The Leonids meteor showers are a part of the tail of Comet Tempel-Tuttle. Visible in the +5, 6, 7, and 8 time zones peak after 10:42 PM PST at the eastern horizon, look for them radiating from the constellation Leo, near the bright star Regulus. The Full Moon will unfortunately make it difficult to view. Even so, the gifts of Light symbolizing intuition and creativity accessed from the Collective Consciousness*** can, at this time be accepted and retained as a permanent part of your life.

***Jung saw the Collective Unconscious as a deep level of archetypal images. I view the Collective Consciousness as a shared consciousness that incorporates current shifting ideas and values and their initial conditions, and is a resource for our growth. The Collective Consciousness is a component shared by our animal and spiritual natures that unites humanity in its evolutionary path.

As the Sun enters Sagittarius on November 21st, we celebrate the festival of the Roman Diana (Greek Artemis), goddess of the Moon and the hunt. This coincides with the celebration of Cecilia, patron saint of music and of the blind. And November 25 marks the day of honor for Persephone (Kore), Demeter’s daughter and queen of the underworld during the three dark months of the year.

Persephone was kidnapped from Demeter (Earth Mother goddess) by Hades (Pluto) from the Earth’s surface. Because she took in nourishment (a bite of pomegranate) in Hades’ kingdom, she was to remain in the underworld during the three dark months of the year, providing it with light and warmth. For the other nine months she lived above ground with her mother. Her story relates to the fecundity of the Earth in its growing season and the life cycle of death, gestation and rebirth. Pomegranate fruit is mentioned in the Bible as one of the blessed species of the Land of Israel (Deuteronomy 8:8). Pomegranates decorated the columns in the Temple in Jerusalem, and the robes of the high priests. Jewish tradition likens the pomegranate, which has 613 seeds, to the human body, which has 613 nerves, and the Torah, which contains 613 commandments. In numerology, 613=1, the number of new beginnings. The pomegranate symbolizes fertility and the potential beginning of life in many different cultures and religions.

Some of the plants of Jupiter, which rules Sagittarius, have leaves that are large and conspicuous (fig, olive, grape), and fruit that is edible and nutritious (acorn, beechnut); and many have a pleasant odor (mulberry, clove, nutmeg and marjoram). The showy Horsetail, an herb high in silica, is a good builder of bones. Sagittarius rules the thighs, the thickest bones in the human body. November Sagittarius is a time for running, stretching the legs, getting to the top of the next hill to see what’s on the other side.

While Sagittarius exemplifies the union of the human and the animal natures, it also symbolizes humanness rising from the shoulders of animalness. The duality of Sagittarius creates a forum for Pluto as it journeys through the mutable fire sign. Pluto, responsible for the transformation process and ruler of the underworld came into the upper world of mundane reality to claim his bride, creating a marriage of two worlds.

As Pluto travels through the Leo decanate of Sagittarius, we still feel wedged between those two realities, the sensible and supersensible, the mundane and the spiritual. Truth becomes a personal issue; some people are more attracted to one reality while others are attracted to the other. It is up to each person to integrate the outer personality with the inner mystical nature, setting the basis of integration within our world, which polarization has weakened, enabling the destruction of the unity that must be present to support its healthy growth.

November is a month of remembrance and thanksgiving for Universal bounty. Veterans Day reminds us of those who have served the ideals of their country. Thanksgiving takes place on Thursday, Jupiter’s day when the Sun is in the Sagittarius decanate of Sagittarius, whose key word is devotion. That decanate is pictured in the sky by the constellation Lyra, the harp. Harps were used in ancient times for giving praise to the gods of plenty. Jupiter, ruler of Sagittarius symbolizes abundance of harvest. Livestock were sacrificed with ceremony in November, because they could not be kept alive through the winter months. Prayers of thanksgiving were given in most ancient religions during this time.

Thanksgiving takes place on Thursday, November 24, when the Sun is in the Sagittarius decanate of Sagittarius, whose key word is devotion. Prayers of thanksgiving were given in most ancient religions during this time.

Sunday, November 27 is the beginning of Advent, which runs until December 24, Christmas Eve. It is the Christian time of preparation for celebrating the birth of Christ. The lighting of special candles is a part of their ceremonies to celebrate the return of the Light of the World.

Sagittarian prayers are grand in scope, and as powerful as the arrow of the centaur in finding its mark. At this time I ask that you join me in a dedicated focus to dissolve the ever-growing clouds of rage and despair that encircle our globe like giant donuts. The clouds feed on fear and guilt and hate, and only love can dissolve them. Together we can image a laser beam striking and disbursing those dark clouds, freeing Earth’s inhabitants to pursue more loving goals.

October in History

10/3 In 1962, Sigma Seven was launched at 7:15 EST from Cape Canaveral, FL, with Walter M. Schirra at the helm. It made 6 Earth orbits in 9 hours, 13 minutes, 11 seconds before the first Pacific landing, only 4 ½ miles from their aiming point. Captain Shirra also captained the Apollo 7 flight on 10/17/68 1.

10/5 was the 82nd anniversary of Edwin Hubble’s discovery of the Cepheid variable in the Andromeda Galaxy.

10/6 marks the first decade since a planet was first discovered to orbit another star (51 Pegasi).

10/23 marks the centenary of Karl Jansky, father of radio astronomy. Do you recall his namesake, Robert Karl Jansky, one of the first astrologers to summarize western astrological techniques in the 20th century?

October Phenomena

10/16 Venus dazzles us as it journeys near the fixed star Antares, which sets at twilight in the northern hemisphere. Venus is white, while Antares is a ruddy red.

Mars edges very closely to the Earth for a month, reaching perigee (only 43.1 million miles from Earth) on 10/29. Mars won’t be this bright in our sky again until 2018. Mars culminates for our viewing pleasure (18 Taurus 10 Rx, 16 North declination) at 1:41 AM PDT (4:41 AM EDT).

10/17 The Lunar eclipse may be viewed on the western half of north and south America before the Moon sets (5:13 AM PDT).

10/21 the Orionid meteor shower will probably not be visible due to the light of the Moon, but the gifts of the spirit will shower upon us nevertheless.

Retrograde Shadow

The area of the zodiac through which a planet travels three times defines the "Retrograde Shadow". Each planet travels through its shadow first forward - then backward - then forward again. You might think of that section of the zodiac as temporarily sensitized - as if it were symbolically marked with a retrograde flag, which casts a shadow over the entire area. As the planet moves through the Shadow for the first time, ideas and situations will emerge that give hints to the nature of the planet’s journey through the shadow, and they will need to be re-examined during the rest of the retrograde cycle. While the planet is actually retrograde, a different perspective will be available. There may be a reversal of energies at this time. This is a time to gather information and review what has been happening. When the planet turns "direct" and moves through the Shadow for the last time, a new perspective may be viewed; and all that was learned during the first two passes may be absorbed and integrated. When the planet leaves the Shadow, that knowledge may be put into practice.

In 1980, I first referred to this area of the zodiac as the Retrograde Shadow. The position where the planet enters the shadow for the first time is called the Beginning Shadow Boundary. The position where the planet finally leaves the shadow is called the Ending Shadow Boundary. The following diagram shows the whole shadow and a planet’s path through it.

The next Mercury Shadow begins on October 25 and ends on December 21 at the winter Solstice. Mark those degrees in your natal chart and watch the process.
